From Fragrance to Finished Product: How a Candle Brand Comes to Life (Part 1)
You've found the perfect fragrance. You've envisioned the vessel. But before you pour your first batch or sign up for custom candle programs, you have to build the foundation. Most brands fail not because their product was bad, but because their "backend" was messy.
Here is your checklist for Part 1: Setting up the business.
1. Identity and Protection
- The Name & Trademark: What is the brand name? Once you have it, have you checked if it's available? Trademarking isn't always step one, but it should be on your radar before you spend thousands on branding that someone else already owns.
- The Legal Structure: Is this an LLC, or are you running it under your own name (Sole Proprietorship)? An LLC often provides the protection you need as a business owner.
- Uncle Sam & The Bank: You'll need an EIN (Tax ID) from the IRS. Use that to open a dedicated business bank account. Never mix your personal money with your candle money.
2. The Digital Storefront
Where will your candles live? You have several paths:
- The Big Three: Shopify is the gold standard for e-commerce, but Squarespace and BigCommerce are strong contenders.
- Marketplaces: Etsy and Amazon offer built-in traffic but take a bigger cut of your margins.
- The Domain: Buy your domain (e.g., .com) separately so you own your digital real estate regardless of which platform you choose.
3. Permits and Logistics
- Seller's Permit: If you plan to sell in person or online, your state will likely require a seller's permit.
- Inventory & Expenses: How are you tracking the money? A spreadsheet works for the first month, but QuickBooks is the industry standard for keeping your bills and inventory straight.
- Shipping: You likely aren't renting a warehouse yet. Use tools like ShipStation or Stamps.com to get commercial shipping rates from your home office.
4. The "Technical" Question: Do I Need UPCs?
Founders often ask: "Are UPCs (Universal Product Codes) mandatory?"
- If you are selling on your own website: No. You just need Part Numbers (SKUs) to keep your inventory organized.
- If you want to sell on Amazon or in big-box retail: Yes. You will need GS1-registered UPCs for every unique scent and size combination.
