When to Place Your Holiday Candle Order: A Timeline for Candle Brands
Every year, the same thing happens: a wave of candle brands realize in October that they wanted a holiday collection, and there simply isn't enough time left to make it happen properly. Custom manufacturing takes real lead time, and holiday season is when every factory, freight carrier, and label printer is at its busiest. If you want candles on shelves — or in inboxes — by December, the planning has to start much earlier than most founders expect.
Here's a general timeline to work backward from.
Late Summer: Concept and Sampling
This is when scent selection, vessel choice, and label design should be locked in. Sampling takes time, especially if you're testing fragrance load or a new wax blend, and you want room to request a second round of samples if the first doesn't hit the mark.
Early Fall: Finalize and Place Your Production Order
By this point, your artwork, labels, and packaging should be finalized and approved. This is also when you place your actual production order. Holiday-season production slots fill up fast, and manufacturers are often working through multiple brands' orders back to back, so getting in the queue early matters more than it does at other times of year.
Mid Fall: Production and Quality Checks
Your order moves through production, curing, and quality control. Building in a buffer here is worth it. A short delay is an inconvenience in July; the same delay in November can mean missing the holiday window entirely.
Late Fall: Shipping and Fulfillment Prep
Freight carriers see their heaviest volume of the year in the weeks before the holidays. Product needs to arrive with enough time for you to photograph it, load it into your store or wholesale accounts, and get it in front of customers before the shopping rush peaks, not after.
The Biggest Mistake We See
The most common misstep isn't poor planning; it's waiting for total certainty before committing. Founders wait to finalize a scent lineup, hoping for more data or more confidence, and lose weeks they can't get back. A good rule of thumb: if you're seriously considering a holiday launch, start the sampling conversation while it still feels early.
