Wick Selection Guide
Choosing the right wick is the difference between a candle that tunnels or soots and one that burns clean, edge to edge. This guide walks you through it in three steps, plus how our two wick series differ.
The two series — start here
Every Aroma Crafters wick is 5" tall and pre-tabbed, sold in 25-packs. They come in two series tuned for different waxes:
- Precision (Aroma-Lite): tuned for our Premium Soy Blend wax. Reach for these if you pour straight soy.
- Harmony (CD): suited to All-Natural Coconut-Soy and soy blends. Coconut-forward waxes hold more fragrance and need a little more heat, which the Harmony series is built for.
If you're not sure which wax you have, match the series to the wax you buy from us: coconut-soy → Harmony, premium soy → Precision.
Three steps to the right size
- Measure your vessel's inner diameter (across the top of the wax, not the glass rim), in inches.
- Match it to the wick's rated melt-pool diameter. Each wick's product page lists the approximate wax-pool width it's designed to reach. Pick the model whose rated pool is closest to your vessel's inner diameter. Within each series, lower model numbers throw a smaller pool and higher numbers a larger one.
- Always test-burn. Burn one candle for 2–4 hours and check the melt pool. You want it to reach the edge (a full, even pool) without a tall flame, soot, or mushrooming on the wick tip.
When to size up or down
Size up a wick (or move to the next higher model) if your test burn tunnels, leaves unmelted wax at the edges, or the melt pool doesn't reach the glass. Larger vessels, higher fragrance loads, and dark dyes all tend to need a bit more wick.
Size down a wick if you see a tall or flickering flame, black soot on the glass, or mushrooming (a carbon ball) on the wick tip. That's a sign the wick is over-driving the wax.
A quick starting point by vessel size
These are starting points for testing, not a substitute for a test burn — every wax, fragrance, and color combination behaves a little differently:
- Small tins & votives (about 2"–2.5" inner diameter): start at the lower model numbers in your series.
- Standard 8–10 oz jars (about 2.5"–3"): start in the middle of the range.
- Large or wide vessels (3"+): start at the higher model numbers, and consider a double-wick setup for vessels wider than about 3.5".
